Privacy & site settings

Permissions, cookies, clearing data, content blocking and the task manager.

Ads and trackers

Aetherium blocks third-party ads and trackers out of the box. In Preferences › Content Blocking you can choose Allow all ads and trackers, Block third-party ads and trackers or Block all ads and trackers, list sites where ads are allowed, and block scripts or images entirely.

For a single site, type !disableblocking (or !enableblocking) in the address bar.

Site permissions

Sites must ask before using your notifications, camera, microphone or mouse lock. Location, reading your clipboard and MIDI devices are blocked unless you allow them. Pop-ups are allowed unless you block them. Your answers are remembered; private tabs never remember them.

  • One site: click the lock icon in the address bar and change its Permissions, or Reset permissions.
  • All sites: ⋮ › Site settings... has two tabs, Permissions and Cookies and site data. Search for a site to review or remove what it stored, or Delete all. Cookie values are never shown.

Clear browsing data

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete or choose ⋮ › Clear browsing data....
  2. Pick a Time range: Last hour, Last 24 hours, Last 7 days, Last 4 weeks or All time.
  3. Tick what to clear: Browsing history, Download history, Cookies and other site data, Cached images and files, Site permissions.
  4. Press Clear data.
Careful
Download history, cookies and cached files are always cleared for all time, whatever range you pick. Saved passwords are never cleared here, and private tabs are not affected.

Private tabs and Guest windows

  • A private tab (Ctrl+Shift+P ) keeps no history and does not save its cookies to your profile. Extensions do not run in it.
  • A Guest window (profile menu › Guest) forgets everything when you close it.

Secure connections

Aetherium tries https:// first for every address you type. See Address bar & search.

Task manager

If Aetherium feels slow, press Shift+Esc (or ⋮ › Tools › Task manager). It shows the memory and CPU of every tab and extension and how much memory sleeping tabs save. Select a row and press Sleep tab, or End process to stop a stuck page or extension.

What Aetherium sends

  • The daily update check sends only the version number, your operating system and processor type.
  • Sync sends only data encrypted with your passphrase.
  • The AI agent sends the page you ask it about to the AI you chose. With Ollama on your own computer, nothing leaves it.
